That MYSTERY is what this carving’s about.  A river of faces that flows from an unknown source and runs to... where? ...right out of the picture.  The trees are so thick that nothing is revealed in the forest.  And the figure is right on the edge of the water.  She is either backing down into the flow or disappearing into the trees.  Right on the edge of physical existence.
