“Ego•zilla”, 35" x 23" x 1", acrylic on hand carved basswood, 1997
The real monsters live inside us. In analyzing this carvings symbols psychologically, the water represents the subconscious mind. Our hero, wearing a pair of pajamas, is asleep and in the depths of his own personal mystery. He is at the very bottom, in the last place his ego can hide. The huge monster down there with him is that manifestation of his ego (all the drive of his hopes, fears and grasping at self). If he only realized, perhaps he could ‘wake up’ and slay that dragon.
If you can't see the monster, start in the lower left corner with the giant clawed foot. From the foot to the top of the piece is the haunch, and part of a tail extends across the middle. The entire height of the ‘Ego•zilla Monster’ would be more than double that of the artwork.
